Haruki Murakami - The Second Bakery Attack
Note to self: do not ruin by reading other peoples’ interpretations.
Under Duress: Agency, Power and Consent, Part One: “No”
Bookmark for myself. Ways to talk about “the tricky gray area of consent,” very well written.
googling “why are women…”
and letting it fill in the blanks, I got:
as of 2008, US women still earn only 77 cents on the male dollar
(68 percent if you’re a black woman, 58 percent if you a Latina)
if you account for worker differences by controlling for education and experience, it leaps to 81%
add in occupation, industry, and union participation, and it jumps all the way to 91%!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(because women tend to cluster in lower-paying fields - gee guess it’s their fault, huh?)
until you factor in the fact that in traditionally male dominated fields, women are more likely to be discriminated against, not taken seriously, less likely to be awarded a research grant or a promotion, less likely to have access to the “good old boys” system, and expected to choose between family and career in ways that men aren’t (even though men become parents too)
the most educated women go to nursing and teaching, and oh wait - isn’t teaching that profession in which you make 86% of what professions requiring similar levels of education make? even though you’re responsible for developing the critical thinking skills of the whole country’s damn future?

in a study of 3700 women in 230 companies, half of those who leave engineering do so because of an “uncomfortable work climate” or other non-family related issue, including low salary
even though engineering is one of the “best” US jobs right now and demand is on the rise

why women aren’t funny: because men are the ones who had to adapt to be funny to appeal to we the women,
and, given the wit is a sign of intelligence: “many women believe, or were taught by their mothers, that they become threatening to men if they appear too bright.”
not even going to numbers this one - I’ve got more wit then this fool would know what to do with

"The people you meet when you write about rape"
**Trigger Warning** Rape apologists, rape naysayers, rape deniers

hi, my name is camille and
1. I have no desire to use or reclaim the word ‘slut’.
(Here’s a nice primer on how we use the oh so powerful word:
http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/2010/04/04/what-is-slut-shaming/)
2. I personally do not go shoe shopping when I’m with my female friends. That’s fucking boring, and I don’t need anyone asking me why I need a third pair of identical lace up boots.
3. Alyssa from Chasing Amy is not selling out by sleeping with a man because she is in love with him. People, I think, fall in love with people. Sexuality is a weird sea full of funny things. It is not a two option thing.
4. Vaginoplasty, what the fuck?
If you have the good fortune to be seeing me naked - if I have the good fortune to be seeing you naked - it does not make sense to hate what you see so much that you think it’s okay to cut it up. As Weezy, great arbiter of feminism, says: “Take my lollipop and enjoy it.”
